Doctor vs Physician: Which is the Right Word?

Have you ever wondered whether to use the word “doctor” or “physician”?  Using these words correctly is part of the secret handshake that can position you as a medical insider—or announce that you’re an outsider. 

Here’s a rule of thumb: be as specific and inclusive as possible in any given circumstance. If you’re talking to an old college buddy, and you’re describing your work with physicians and dentists, use the word “doctor.” If you’re writing an article for Physician Money Digest, read only by physicians, use physicians. If you’re talking to a group of cardiologists, use “cardiologist”.
