The Book I Almost Didn’t Write — And Why It Might Be Your Secret Weapon for Reaching Doctors

We’re popping the champagne over here. After almost four years in the making, my latest book How Doctors Build TrueWealth is finally in production.

In this blog post, I want to share the heart behind this book—what it’s about, why it took so long, and how you, as a financial advisor, can use it to attract, engage, and serve more doctor clients.

Why This Book?

This all started with a simple question from a colleague:
“What’s the one thing successful financial advisors do differently when working with doctors?”

That question lit a spark. And from that moment on, I knew I had to write this book. But I didn’t want to create just another “how to” guide. I wanted to craft a practical, transformative resource—a field manual for financial advisors who want to connect with doctors on a deeper level.

The more I spoke with physicians, the clearer the patterns became. Their relationship with money is different. Their path to wealth-building is different. So our approach must be different too.

Doctors often start their careers deeply in debt, late to earn, and under tremendous pressure. Many have never received formal financial education. They are brilliant, driven—and often overwhelmed. Burnout is real, and it’s not just emotional. It’s neurobiological.

If you want to build trust and deliver real value to doctor clients, you need to understand their mindset—not just their math.

The Anatomy of the Book

This book went through many iterations. I asked myself:
Should it be a tactical manual? A collection of stories? A meditation on medicine and money?

I tried it all. Outlined it, re-outlined it, even shelved the project for a time. But the vision never left. Eventually, I found the right frame—one that integrates:

  • Real stories from doctors and advisors

  • Evidence-based strategies

  • Actionable tools

Each chapter stands alone, but all reinforce one core message:
TrueWealth isn’t just about money—it’s about freedom, purpose, and legacy.

The central framework I share is the TrueWealth Engine. This model helps physicians understand how they trade their time for money—and how to put money to work buying back their time. It’s not just about income or investing. It’s about building lives that align with the TrueYou—the part of them that’s authentic, values-driven, and no longer running on fumes.

The Flip Side of Burnout

I say this often: burnout and TrueWealth are two sides of the same coin. When doctors live out of sync with their values—when their calendars and bank accounts don’t reflect who they truly are—they burn out.

But when doctors take control of their financial lives and begin to live in alignment with their purpose, everything changes. That’s the life of TrueWealth.

And here’s where you, the advisor, come in.

Why Advisors Should Care

This book is not just for physicians. It’s for the people who serve them. Financial advisors who “get” this message will stand out in a crowded field.

Let’s be honest. Doctors are bombarded with people trying to sell them something. What they’re not getting enough of is genuine advocacy. They want someone who understands the pressures they face, who sees them not just as income streams, but as people.

When you can speak their language—when you can acknowledge the hidden emotional toll of delayed gratification, imposter syndrome, and the “fawning” reflex (that chronic people-pleasing response to stress)—you’ll build a deeper connectionFINAL April 14 010825 R….

That’s the real gold. Doctors don’t need another pitch. They need a partner.

What’s Inside the Book?

You’ll find tools to help you:

  • Start meaningful conversations with doctor clients

  • Understand their emotional triggers around money

  • Frame your value in a way that resonates

  • Handle objections rooted in perfectionism or shame

  • Ethically leverage referrals from doctor clients who trust you

There’s a chapter on burnout that treats it not as a mindset issue, but as a nervous system issue. I show how dysregulation impacts decision-making and how doctors can rewire their brains to make better financial choicesFINAL April 14 010825 R….

There’s another chapter that breaks down the TrueWealth framework—the intersection of a rich life, a wealthy life, and a satisfied life. That’s the goal: not just accumulation, but alignmentFINAL April 14 010825 R….

How You Can Use the Book

This isn’t a book to sit on a shelf. This is a bridge—to trust, to credibility, to better conversations. Here are just a few ways advisors are already planning to use it:

  • Send a signed copy to prospects as a conversation starter

  • Host a webinar based on one of the chapters

  • Build a workshop around the TrueWealth framework

  • Use the exercises to guide 1:1 coaching conversation

It’s a great way to say, “I understand you. I care. And I can help.”

And if you’re already working with doctor clients, it’s a way to go deeper—help them not only grow their portfolios but design their lives.

A Thank You and an Invitation

Writing this book took longer than I planned. But I’m glad I stuck with it. Because I believe this message matters.

And I believe the doctors you serve need to hear it—from someone they trust.

So, thank you for being here. Thank you for doing work that matters. Thank you for helping doctors reclaim their lives.
